A question about horses! =D?

Im getting a horse..and i want to know which horse breed would be best for trail rides and good with kids??
Answers:
Quarter horses are mostly use for trails and mountain riding they are also very tolerant of other. please make sure you have pleny of room and not just getting a horse for the kids. They will soon loose interest trust me it has happened here! Good Luck
I'm sorry to say this but I've had horses for a while and for KIDS.. the below answer is wrong. Ponies would be the best there small and are good on trail rides. Just make sure it's a good pony. Dont get one from an auction they normally can have dieses and will get any other animals sick. Go to equine.com
Really depends on who you ask (everyone has their favorites, just like dogs...)- any horse has the potential to do both those things with just regular riding and experience. Personally I love quarter horses, but honestly, for kids- I would start with a pony. They feel more confident on a smaller horse. Some ponies can be naughty though- I have had GREAT success with POA's. (Pony of America) They are usually just a tad bigger then say a shetland or something like that- but they have the sweetest personalities. Good luck and have fun!
From my experience, you can never go wrong with a good ole' Quarter Horse. I have 4, and they are GREAT with kids, and wonderful for trail rides. They are pretty much willing to do anything and are great at it. But please be sure you have room, and you have the resources to take care of it!! GOOD LUCK!
Well I dont think you should look for a breed.
I think you should be looking for a horse that is best for trail rides and good with kids.
All breeds could be like that if they were handled correctly.
Icelandic Horses are great for trail riding and they are just the right size for childrens mount. They have a gentle disposition which makes them good with kids. You could also get an Appaloosa, they are great all around horses again good with kids, my first horse was an Appy. And you can never go wrong with a Quarter Horse they can do just about anything!
well i would get a palomino because they are good on trail rides but it all depends on there personality.
any breed! it just depends on the horses temperament and training. probably the most verstile and laid back would be a paint or a quarter horse, but any breed or mix breed would do fine depending on the attitude.
To me quarter horses are perfect, and built very sturdy to get around tough trails, they also seem to love children. But just keep in mind every horse has different personallities, and even quarter horses, may have some bad training, or experience on trails or with kids, so make sure, what ever breed you look into, make sure that the owner tells you if they are used to kids, and trails, and anything else you are going to do with it. But over all I think the Quarter horse is great for both of things you are looking into.. Good luck!!
Definately a Quarter Horse thats well broke.
I take wester lessons on quarter horses, and even the not-so-good-tempered ones are awesomely nice!
You can't go wrong!
Spazzy
Any Breed there's good and bad in them all (I like to think mostly good)
What kind do you like?
If you don't know there are some good Horse Encyclopedias that have some great Information.
Certain breeds may be better suited for the area that you live in.
I ride an Appendix Quarter Horse in Canada if that helps
Quarterhorses are almost always dependable, sturdy, adorable and gentle, not too big, and resonably priced. For kids I would avoid arabs (jumpy) ponies (stuborn) and thouroghbreds (can be mean), and any horse that is just huge.
Any breed, as long as the horse has enough experiance and training it will be fine. If you dont intend on showing a particular circut or disipline, then go on the individual horse rather than breed sterotypes.
Going by the sterotypes then In genral, quarter horses are very laid back, and good for kids.
I strongly disagree that ponies are good for kids. Ponies can be little monsters, this is because most of the time because of their size they have never been ridden by anyone but children, meaning they have a ton of bad habits, and bad training. If you get a pony, get a large one that is big enough to be ridden comfortably by an adult. Even if you only intend on having your kids ride it, if it gets badly behaved you will want to be able to have an adult get on it and get it into shape. Quarter ponies (small quarter horses) are usually good for kids, and welsh ponies tend to be very nice. Shetlands are little terrors, and I have found POA's to be basicly the same as shetlands.
First thing to know about horses for children, DO NOT GET A STALLION. A stallion, if you don't know, is a male horse that still has its "parts", and a stallion will rear at the scent of a mare (a female that's able to breed) and take off after it. A gelding, which is a male horse without its parts, is a safe bet. I forget what a "fixed" female horse is called, but you'd be better with one that won't take off for a mate. Mares won't do that, only the stallions. Strawberry roan destriers are good horses, but don't like the spurs too much. They're kinda big, though, so you'll need parental supervision ON the horse if you want your kids to ride it. A chestnut is a good one too. A Mustang is kinda wild, so I wouldn't recommend one of those. That's all I know about horses, good luck!
Hi there!
I am going to have to disagree and agree with several of the different answers you have already received.
I agree that Quarter horses are great. BUT you have to get the RIGHT quarter horse. I have 4 QHs right now and they are all amazingly mannered. We trail ride with all of them and I also use them for lessons.
Personally I started on horses and then got a pony and then went back to horses. It totally depends on the temperment of the horse or pony. One problem with ponies is that they are quickly out grown. I still have my childhood pony (who is now a retired pasture pony that just gets loved on since he is 26!)
If I were you I would look for a very sturdy, even tempered horse with a lot of previous experience that you can trust with your kids. By sturdy and even tempered I don't mean slow, old and lazy! I would look for something in the 8-12 years old range. Make sure to ride it BEFORE you buy it. I see so many people that go and buy a horse based on what the owner says and then get home and aren't happy at all!
GOOD LUCK!!
Well, quarter horses are ussually very calm and great for trail rides. Paints are too. Also most pony breeds are fun trail horses. Make sure your kids ride them at leats 5 times before you buy the horse.
Well from experience, a good gaited horse would be the right way to go. All I do is trail riding (fieldtrials...look it up) and having a gaited horse that I don't have to post to, or bounce my butt all day is nice. I usually ride between 4-6 hours on the trails, so a smooth horse is nice. Some nice gaited horses are Tennessee Walking Horses (TWH), or Missouri Foxtrotter (MFT). I am 15 riding a TWH, and sometimes riding an (MFT), my 12 yr old brother has ridden a MFT since he was 9 or so. They have good temperments, and are great with kids. A gaited horse basically is a horse that does not trot. Paso Fino, Peruvian, Icelandic, Rocky Mountain, Kentucky Mountain, Spotted Saddle, Florida Cracker, Racking, some Morgans, some Saddlebreds, some Standardbreds. Just a list of most of the gaited horses. The gait these are noted for are all four beated gaits. There are four distinct footfalls. Its also easier to stay in the saddle with a gaited horse.
heres a website if you want more information

Personally I like Appaloosas, they are a very forgiving tolerant breed. Behind Arab I see more Appaloosa on endurance rides then any other breed . Quarter horses tend to have more muscle and tend not to cool as well on long hot rides, but you find good and bad in all breeds of horses.
I don't think I would go with a pony, good ponies are hard to find and if you need to school or train a pony its hard to find someone small enough to do the job right.
Check out the German riding ponies, I saw them at a horse show and it had a very excellent temperament. The German Riding Pony is a unique pony breed that developed in Germany forty years ago due to the need for a large pony with the athleticism and temperament for children to compete with at a national and international level. Specifically, the German Riding Pony (GRP) was bred to be a competitive pony in the disciplines of dressage, show jumping, and eventing. English pony breeds, particularly type B Welsh, were crossed with smaller Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds and Arabians with the goal of obtaining a smaller version of the German Warmblood. Within ten years, the German Riding Pony type was showing good results in competition and breeding.
Anyway, just a little something different and to open your eyes to different breeds. Remember to do your research.
do alot of research,go check out some auctions, not all are sick, its like a pound you might save a life, make sure your checkbook accomadates such an animal, they eat,alot..they need shots, feet trimed, god forbid they get hurt they need dr.s,horses are not for kids, trails,THEY ARE FOR LIFE,they deserve the best possible one you can give them, research on differant breeds,be sure the kids dont get a horse for its color,size,breed...look for conformation,diposition,attitu... and personality, yes they have personality...now as for 'breeds' appaloosas love people, now my breed arabians, they are a little hyper tho,but good with people, and can go for ever...like the energizer bunny,we rode from oklahoma to las vegas with our arbian horse club, there wonderful beautiful creatures.think,read,resear... before you buy
Any breed can be a good trail horse. What you need to be looking at in a horse is its ability to ride on trails, how it interacts with children, its overall disposition, and how "bombproof" (how it reacts to loud noises and "scary" objects, like a tarp flapping) it is. It can be tough to find a really good trail horse, so be prepared to look a lot!
I would not recommend a pony unless your children are experienced riders. Ponies tend to be very stubborn and hard to ride. Sure, they are smaller, but they are harder to ride, and therefore more dangerous for inexperienced riders.
Make sure that you get a vet tocheck out any horse you are considering purchasing before you agree to anything.
i personally like Arabs or quarter horses, lovable and beautiful.
Stay away from Arabian horses, Appalossa Horses (to start out on) Quarter Horses and Palamino's are best.
When PURCHASING a horse, its not just WHAT you know but WHO you know. Talk to horsey people around you, in your community, who will know of horses for sale, and get recommendations. Trials are a safe way to go, to make sure you are getting exactly what you want. As for breeding, I agree with whoever said it above - its not about the pedigree but the temperament. Just because it's a thoroughbred doesn't mean it will run fast, just because its an Arab doesn't mean its going to be too much to handle (I learnt to ride on a part arab). Don't rush.
well i have 8 QH's. they are all (almost) good on trails! they are very calm, even my young ones. but it doesnt really matter the breed, there are Qhs out there that are crazy!!! when i was 9 i got a mule(well he had pony and a small bit of donkey.) and he was great. i still have him, but he is 42yrs old so he is not ridable. maybe have you and your kids look up some breeds, learn some stuff about them, and see if you find a breed that sounds good to you all!but one thing i do recommende- DO NOT GET A STALLION!!! not all stallions are crazy, but when around mares, they try to get to them and they will go nut5s! if you want to get a mare, i will tell u this: they get grumpy but not all mares. geldings i personally like cause they not really grumpy. well some! well i hope this helps! good luck!!! =)
