O.K. so you rider her 5 times a week, do you ever go out into the pasture with a carrot in your pocket just to talk or pet her...? this may help with her mental picture of what happens when YOU come out tot he pasture...does it always mean work for her? How many other pasture mates does she have? If she has even one other pasture mate...try going to the buddy first, giving it the carrot and you loveing...that will more than likely get her curiosity up, and over she will come just to check it out...give her some loving and a carrot once she has come over.. then walk out of the pasture..or catch her and take her to the barn and just brush her then let her go...try this for about a week...I bet after that...she will make sure that she gets to the carrot first. and will be happy to go for a ride.
your horse has figured out that when she is caught it means work. i would for one suggest that you make her work in the pasture if she wont let you catch her, ie. throw rocks to make her run around. second sometimes when you catch her, dont work her. just take her in and give her a nice brushing and a treat. dont make it so that everytime you are catching her something she doesnt want to do. its not that she's herd bound , she is smart she knows that you equal work for her. our filly is that way at the trainers, he says it takes forever for him to catch her. granted she is an appy and a bit stubborn but she aint stupid. they catch on quick. good luck to you.
Change up what you do don't just catch your horse and saddle up and ride brush and fool around before you ride.Play and treat your horse make her want to know what's you guys are going to be doing and its a bad thing to use grain all the time to catch your horse, reward your animal for coming to you not you having to chase it.
start a new routine with her. she doesn't want to ride so she runs away. when you take her out, go and groom her, or just let her stand there tied up, or go take a walk, or give her a bath, even if she doesn't need it. don't immediately tack her up and start riding. she will start to think that the only thing she does when she comes out is ride. if she is just being a "brat" and is running away from you to not ride, just wait. i have noticed with my two fillies that they will run away from me and buck and go crazy, if i just stand there and wait for them to stop throwing a fit, they will know that I'm just going to wait and they will come over. i have tried this with another one of my horses and they also came right to me. if they have hay or a round bale in their pasture, stand by that, they aren't going to leave their food. hope this helps!
maybe she thinks you are playing chase with her . my dog does that.
i am having same problem but my horse has worked out that the spring grass is in and if she does not come she can eat more grass
I dealt with this problem with my mare, and I know it can be very frustrating. I found that not always working her when I got her out of the pasture made it a more positive experience for her. For example I 'd only take her out for a short time and lavish her with attention by grooming or giving her a bath. Of course I still ride and work her, just not every time. As far as breaking the habit of not coming to me in the pasture. I call her and offer treats at first but if she doesn't listen then I punish her. If she wants to run away from me than I'll MAKE her run. This can be tiresome for you but it works. My mare realized after about 20 minutes that running away wasn't fun. I'd let her stop after a little while and ask her to come to me, if she didn't I'd push her on again with a whip or lead rope. Eventually she gave in. Each time it got easier and easier and now she usually comes to me without a problem. Every great once in awhile she'll try to pull a "catch me if you can" but once she sees the whip she changes her mind real quick.
Well the reason it has gotten harder to catch is probably because she has become accustom to you and she knows that you are going to make her work, try surprising her or just walking in the pen without trying to catch her. Make her wonder if she is gonna have to run away. Try just petting her giving her treats and then leaving so she doesn't know what to expect anymore.
She has begun to associate you with work. Be mindful of her fitness level and keep the rides interesting and give lots of praise and rest periods as needed. Don't always work her, sometimes just give her a thorough brushing and/or bath.
Instead of riding her every time you get her out, go out in the pasture with nothing and just rub on her and maybe brush her if it is something she enjoys. Do this every once in a while just to let her know that when she sees you it doesn't always mean ride.Maybe get her out saddle her up and play the passenger game. You ride her and let her pick where she wants to go. Your only job is to keep her walking and not let her get into danger. it will be a more enjoyable ride for her. She will want to be with you.
If you absolutely have to get her out, when she turns away from you to run away encourage it. Slap your rope and get her moving. On some horses this only takes a few min. Keep pushing her away and don't let her stop unless she is getting overheated or something diar or unless she is coming to you. Horses love to do what humans don't want them to. You know that she is probably going to come to you when you push her away that's why you do it, but she thinks you don't want her near you.
Best wishes
