Any Ideal how to treat a small spot of proud flesh ,short of cutting it off?

Answers:
We had a case of proud flesh and our vet said to put meat tenderizer on the wound. It doesn't hurt the horse, it doesn't need anything else, just sprinkle it on and the flesh softens up and goes back into the leg.
I can't even tell she ever had it.
Good luck.
We used a petroleum based gel such as Vaseline to coat there wounds after we applied antiseptic to them. I did this to a horse who badly cut his leg on our fence. I couldn't afford a vet so I took care of it myself. I kept it bandaged during the day as much as I could and let it breath during the cool of the evening. The Vaseline acts as a barrier keeping the flies off of the wound.
When his wound was healed there was no scar and you could not tell which leg had been cut. The cut he had was deep enough for several stitches.
I know its not good to use things like that on horses but it was the only thing I could do. I used Bag balm but it made it worse.
This will sound horrible and mean but it will work. If it is old, then scrub it till it bleeds (to get the blood flowing). Purchase a bottle of Yellow Lotion, smother it on a piece of cotton wool and bandage to the spot. If unable to bandage just smother, with the lotion. Do this once or twice a day. Yellow Lotion contains sulpher, it will destroy the proud flesh. It also contains antibacterial bits and pain numbing ingredients. If you ever get a fresh wound it will heal it without any scarring, not even hair discolouration. If the Yellow Lotion starts to bubble and foam this means that there is an infection at the site and it must be done twice a day until the foaming stops. I had a mare given to me who had staked herself on a star picket fence, she had ripped a 60cm hole in her side as it was only a flesh wound the vet was not needed. It took me at least 3 months, but unless you knew what she had done you would never know. I gave her to my sister and she is now a grade 2 dressage horse (and moving up) So i know it will work. Good luck
Petroleum based products can be harmful to horses. From my experiences and from the instruction of my veterinarian. To reduce proud flesh, keep the wound soft. Don't using drying agents such as blue coat. Scarlet oil moisturizes and disinfects but in my experience. If you can, use a little peroxide or a 1% (gentle) Iodine to cleanse the wound, then use *Corona ointment and lightly wrap the injury, if possible. Do this daily and do not "dry" out the wound but keep an eye on infection. It has worked for me for years with excellent results.
spread meat tenderizer on the flesh, it keeps the wound soft and it heals it up very well.
On the last major injury I had to treat we used furison to keep the proud flesh at bay. The injury was on the front of both hocks so a very good place for PF to grow. This colt shaved all the skin off the inside of his hocks about a 3" x 4" wound. No suture was even available. We wrapped but just because I couldn't keep him clean. Straw is the best bedding if you can keep them in and not wrap.
We scrubbed it every day to make it bleed and by the time it was all over you couldn't even tell he had any injury. Hair grew back, and not white.
GOOD LUCK!
Equaide. Use this and it clears up all wounds, even the resulting proud flesh, without burning, surgeries and major bills. One of my horses is injury prone and she is the slowest healing horse ever. It's a little big expensive (like $40), but you just put a really thin coat on the area and it heals really fast. www.equuaide.com
Try some of the caustic powder- it is sold under different brand names in different parts of the country. Just sprinkle on enough of it to coat the wound after cleaning, and reapply it at least once every day. The powder will eat through and destroy the proud flesh, and once it is gone, you can treat the remaining wound like any other open wound. Hope this helps.
The best way to treat it is to understand what Proud Flesh is.
When a wound heals in the area fills in with Granulated Tissue. This is GOOD tissue. It fills in the wound. Idealy it fills in up to the level of the skin and no higher. On horses it tends to go over board. The Good tissue grows beyond the level of the skin. Once it is above that level is is bad tissue and has become Proud Flesh.
So Proud Flesh is just good tissue gone bad. You must understand this so that you don't damage the good tissue.
Many 'cures' for Proud Flesh will damage the good tissue. Things like Caustic Powder, Peroxide(Do not use this on wounds!), Lime, Motor Oil, etc can damage the good tissue.
The goal is to shink the Proud Flesh only to the level or just below the level of the skin. If you go any farther you are just damaging good tissue. When you do that it will just make the tissue try to repair the wound faster and make it so that it is more likely to get Proud Flesh.
Also keeping the wound moist can help Proud Flesh also. Drying it out at the right time and the right amount can help slow down the granulated tissue enough to let the skin grown over it. Once the skin as grown over it the granulated tissue stops growing and then you need to keep the area moist again.
The best way to cure Proud Flesh is to avoid it from the start by keeping the granulated tissue withen the skin level. Wrapping it(correctly) can do this, there is also a number of products like EMT gel that form a 'seal' over the wound that acts like the skin layer.
You should never use anything like a Caustic powder on a wound that is not proud flesh. Personally I don't think it should be used at all but many do so it is a choice you need to make.
If you find that you have a wound that is past the skin layer you can get more safe things from the vet that will help to shrink the Proud Flesh. You will need to protect the heal granulated tissue from these products. You can use a Furazone cream for that but there are other better products also. It would work and it's easy to get.
If the Proud Flesh is too large for that the best thing you can do is have it cut back and start over. Trying your best to avoid it getting Proud Flesh again. This will give you a healthy bed of granulated tissue again and much faster then any thing you can put on it. It could really cut your healing time down and will lessen the change of scaring where many 'cures' used will help cause scaring.
