I can't really add anything to the previous poster..everything she said was true. Go to the NARHA site and they will be able to help you find a center. There may not be any withing 40 miles of your home, though, as there just aren't a whole heck of alot around. I had to travel 60 miles to get to my center when I became a volunteer. I loved it so much that I went on to became a certified instructor!
At our center, the volunteers did not have to have any horse experience. The centers will hold orientation and training and every year, we hold a volunteer appreciation day!
Some of the larger centers have reward programs and advancement incentives for their vols.
I do hope you look into this as I think you will find it very rewarding and fun. Good luck in your search!
Oh yeah, as far as the age goes, our center does not allow volunteers under the age of 14 in the arena during lessons, but there are LOTS of other things those under 14 can do....grooming, cleaning tack, helping to feed, helping set up the arena, etc. You are at a great age for training to be the best 14 yr old volunteer out there when you reach your next birthday!
springfield, Illinois??
Use this site to search for therapeutic riding centers in your area:

I've volunteered at a couple places myself and loved it. I can't say for sure what age you'll have to be, that will probably depend on the center, but I was about 14 or 15 when I started volunteering at one. According to the NARHA site, "Most centers accept volunteers 14 years of age and older. However, children younger than 14 who have a strong horsemanship background are often considered." So since you have a lot of experience you may be fine.
