Well, Summer is here and I kind of wanted to try out a little project.
Has anyone made an english saddle pad? I really want to try and make one for my horse-- just for fun so please no negative answers.
Can you tell me how or do you have any good links? (the saddle pad can be for all purpose english, or hunter jumping)
Thanks!

I do this all the time. I like a nice visually clean fit under my saddles so instead of using a generic pattern I put tissue paper on a saddle stand, then the saddle.
I trace the outline of the saddle on the paper, don't tuck in your pencil at all underneath the curve of the leather. This gives the tight outline. If you want to show more, add an inch.
When you transfer this image to fabric, add some space for sewing. You have think of the next part as a puzzle, sewing the exterior side between the two pieces as you will turn it inside out later. Stich around the perimeter, leaving six inches to turn it inside out. Turn right-side out and sew it shut.
I use real sheep's skin so I have to add a bit more for the seam (I presume you know a bit about basic sewing).
You can also use synthetic. I did this project with some students and we used synthetic as it was very easy to work with and inexpensive. Plus you can just throw it into the wash. With the synthetic I used one layer of quilt batting for a bit more cushion.
the best pattern will be a good saddle pad. if you have an old or worn out pad, pop the stitches out of it and use it as the pattern. as a bonus while taking it apart you can see how it was constructed and you will know the new pad will be a good one.
You can buy patterns for horse products at your local fabric store. I used to have several. Horse blankets, pads, fly masks, hay bags, helmet covers etc. They are only about $3 for a pattern envelope with 5 or 6 patterns in it.
Have fun, sounds like a great summer project.
Check this website out (http://www.suitability.com/). They have all sorts of patterns for blankets, saddle pads, clothing and pretty much everything else Equestrian! We bought several patterns and they were all easy to make. If you trace the patterns you can reuse them - we bought the english blouse pattern and now I will never have to buy another one of those! The directions are easy to follow and the results are gorgeous!
Hope that helps!
Hey its Grace again! lol Anyway I want to do the ezact same thing! I would trace a regulare saddle pad on the material then sew it.
I second the website www.suitability.com.
I purchased several patterns from there, from horse blankets to western show apparel. They are all very easy to put together and the website itself gives great links to online fabric stores and such.
Fun summer project hehe im goin to try to make one to my aunt made 1 for me it was swick all im goin to do is cut fabric and i really donno srry but it sounds like fun hopefullly u find out (L)(K) xoxo
I don't know where to find a pattern, but make sure you use a strong but soft fabric and A LOT of padding!
PS sounds like a fun idea. i think I'll try it...
I third the website www.suitability.com it is awesome!
However or where ever you get your pattern, I would suggest that you make it so that you can remove the foam padding. I use Velcro up the front side seam, I use a closed foam or one that is vary dense. By doing it this way you can take the foam out to wash the pad and put the foam back inside your pad when its clean. It fits in the washer better and comes cleaner doing it this way.
I have made many many saddle pads. Check out webs that offers patterns for horse outfits as they will usually have horse clothing as well. Also the book I used the most is How to Make Your Own Horse Clothing. I make sure that the fabric that I use is strong enough, washable, and the padding won't bunch as this may cause a sore. I made a saddle pad(an event pad) for my horse back in '88 and I just retired the pad last year. I spent $10 on materials and had a saddle pad that fit my saddle perfectly.
Good luck and happy sewing
